New Standards Support Patient Data Exchange

Standards development organizations OMG and Health Level Seven International have announced availability of the hData Record Format and hData RESTful Transport specifications for electronically exchanging patient information.

The organizations developed the new standards with assistance from The MITRE Corp. The hData RESTful Transport specifications are low-cost and easy to deploy compared with other exchange standards, according to the organizations.

The hData Record Format enables Web developers to demonstrate a prototype within days. Using hData, medical records present data in a tiered structure enabling access to only the specific information needed. That means physicians could download from an electronic health record just certain pieces of data needed to make decisions, and the specifications support access via mobile computing devices.

The hData RESTful Transport specifications are available for download here. HL7 has published the hData Record Format as a draft standard for trial use, available here.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
