More than 40 percent of respondents support an ACO or medical home initiative, and about 25 percent plan to do so, according to the industry advocacy organization. Many HIEs also are offering infrastructure and analytics technology or consulting to support new payment mechanisms.
The organization identified nearly 300 HIEs and 166 responded to the survey to some degree, with 127 fully completing it. The largest challenges for HIEs, according to respondents, remain privacy and business sustainability, closely followed by a lack of financial resources. Funds mostly come from members and government. However, a majority of HIEs also believe their initiative will be financially sustainable after the HITECH Act funding ends.
