Three Midwestern statewide health information exchanges now are exchanging patient data across state lines.

The Kansas Health Information Network, Nebraska Health Information Initiative and Missouri Health Connection have successfully exchanged patient data using the federally developed Direct Project proposals for secure messaging over the Internet.  Missouri also has tested the exchange of information with Illinois.

Missouri and Illinois use core HIE platforms from InterSystems Corp. Kansas uses a platform from Informatics Corporation of America and Nebraska uses the OptumInsight/Axolotl platform. While these HIEs mark a milestone, the statewide HIE for New Mexico is going in a new direction.

The New Mexico Health Information Collaborative has selected Orion Health as its new HIE platform vendor, replacing MedPlus, which is transitioning out of the HIE business. Among other issues, the migration will include transferring more than 1 million master patient index records to the new platform.
