A listing on the Office of Management and Budget's Web site of rules it must review before publication shows an expected publication date of September 2011, and the HHS Office for Civil Rights confirms that anticipated timetable. Other anticipated deadlines for HHS rules strongly related to health information technology include:
* A proposed rule establishing criteria for Stage 2 of the electronic health records meaningful use incentive program in January 2012, consistent with past expectations, and
* A proposed rule in September 2011 from the Food and Drug Administration to establish unique identifiers for medical devices. "The unique identifier must adequately identify the device through distribution and use, and may include information on the lot or serial number," according to a synopsis.
