HHS Releases Final Omnibus HIPAA Rule

The Department of Health and Human Services has issued a final omnibus rule modifying the HIPAA privacy, security, breach notification and enforcement rules, as well as increasing privacy protections under the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act.

Much of the long-awaited final rule, authorized under the HITECH Act, is quite similar to proposed rules and interim final rules issued during 2009 and 2010 covering privacy, security, breaches and enforcement.
