Three recent initiatives from health information technology vendors directly affect hospitals:

* Healthland will integrate terminology management software into its inpatient and outpatient electronic health records system for community hospitals. The vendor is using the Language Engine platform of Health Language Inc. to embed ICD-10, SNOMED CT and other terminologies in the EHRs for access via a single platform. The combined technologies will enable mapping between ICD-9, ICD-10 and SNOMED CT; guiding physicians to specific billable codes in ICD-10, searching for problems and diagnosis using familiar clinical expressions, and moving problem list data into SNOMED-CT to aid in complying with Stage 2 electronic health records meaningful use, according to the vendors.

* Science Applications International Corp. has introduced a language translation application for health care organizations. Called Omnifluent Health, the product is a tablet device with embedded speech recognition and language translation software to provide translation services with accuracy similar to trained human medical interpreters, according to the company. The cost is cents per minute.

* Hospital revenue cycle outsourcing firm Conifer Health Solutions will acquire InforMed Health Care Solutions for an undisclosed sum. InforMed is a data analytics firm that works with health insurers and other payers on lowering costs while improving care.  The acquisition expands Conifer’s population health management services and brings new business lines. Conifer expects more than $50 million in annual revenue from InforMed once fully integrated.
