The Utah Health Information Network, the state's health information exchange, will conduct a pilot test with the Department of Veteran Affairs to coordinate care between VA treatment facilities and private provider organizations.

The pilot is the fifth in a series the VA is conducting to expand services to veterans through access to the emerging nationwide health information network, and the first pilot to focus on rural areas. About 70 percent of veterans receive some level of health care services from private hospitals and clinics, according to the VA.

Allen Memorial Hospital in Moab, Utah, will be one of the first provider organizations to participate in the pilot. The 25-bed critical access hospital serves the southeastern region of the state. The Utah Health Information Network uses the HIE platform software of Axolotl Corp., San Jose, Calif. More information is available at uhin.org.
