Cardinal Health Foundation has begun accepting applications for its annual E3 Grant Program, which in 2011 again will award more than $1 million to fund programs, which may center on use of information technology, that improve medication or operating room safety.

Since 2008, the foundation of medical/pharmaceutical supplier Cardinal Health Inc. has funded 108 projects. In 2010, for instance it awarded more than $1 million, ranging from $7,500 to $37,500, for 40 programs.

Twenty-eight of the programs funded in 2010 supported medication management safety initiatives. These included implementing computerized provider order entry and bar code-enabled medication administration systems, improving medication reconciliation processes at discharge, providing pharmacists with patient diagnosis on electronic prescription orders, and designating a dedicated pharmacist to improve medication safety.

Grantees in 2011 also will receive hands-on assistance from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Association of peri-Operative Registered Nurses. For more information and to apply by Dec. 3 for a grant, click here.
