The federal Health Resources and Services Administration has awarded 20 grants totaling nearly $18.9 million to assist safety net provider organizations in adopting information technologies. Safety net providers care for uninsured, underinsured and underserved populations.

A dozen grants totaling more than $14.3 million--nine of which were worth about $1.3 million each--will support electronic health records implementation. Another 10 recipients will split $3.8 million in grants ranging from $98,253 to $545,304 for other I.T. projects. These include adopting electronic prescribing, health information exchanges, data warehouses and interoperability technology.

Another $740,000 in total grants will help fund planning by six other organizations to adopt I.T.

HRSA is a division of the Department of Health and Human Services. For the complete list of grant awardees, click here.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
