The Protein Structure Initiative, a National Institutes of Health-sponsored effort to research the protein structure of DNA, has launched a Web portal designed to help share such information.
The new portal, the PSI Structural Genomics Knowledgebase, is designed primarily for biologists who want to know more about a specific protein related to their research in genetics, biochemistry, pharmacology, bioinformatics, clinical medicine or other areas. It enables site visitors to enter the sequence of a protein into a search box on the home page to quickly find the corresponding structure and ones like it, as well as details about function and reports on how the structures were generated.
The portal also offers other information, such as descriptions of new technologies and methods, a list of publications outlining key findings, supplemental funding opportunities for functional studies and links to resources outside of PSI. Further, it offers a glossary of terms and acronyms to help translate the information.
Helen Berman, a structural biologist and bioinformaticist at Rutgers University, is directing the portal. Visitors can give feedback via at http://kb.psi-structuralgenomics.org/KB.
