As of April, the federal government has met its goal for provider participation in the electronic health records meaningful use program by the end of 2013, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

CMS hoped for half of eligible professionals and 80 percent of hospitals to be participating by year-end and those thresholds were reached in April. Providers receive incentive payments for adopting EHRs under the Medicaid program or incentives for meaningfully using EHRs under the Medicare program.

At the end of April, more than 291,000 eligible professionals and over 3,800 eligible hospitals had received incentive payments totaling $14.6 billion.
