FCC Task Force Holds First Broadband Health Roundtable

As part of its "Beyond the Beltway" series, the Federal Communications Commission’s Connect2Health Task Force will hold its first roundtable today at the University of Virginia Center for Telehealth.

As part of its "Beyond the Beltway” series, the Federal Communications Commission's Connect2Health Task Force will hold its first roundtable today at the University of Virginia Center for Telehealth.

The task force is focusing on the “intersection of broadband-enabled technologies and the provision of medical care, particularly in rural and underserved areas.”

In March, the FCC announced the creation of the task force to "bring together the expertise of the FCC on the critical intersection of broadband, advanced technology, and health." The Connect2Health Task Force, touted as the umbrella for all health-related activities at the FCC, is considering ways to accelerate the adoption of healthcare technologies by leveraging broadband and other next-generation communications services.

According to an FCC announcement, today’s event in Charlottesville, Va., will serve as a “forum for discussion about the broader social and economic benefits of broadband-enabled healthcare beyond traditional hospital settings.” Specifically, the task force is seeking to gather information about the status of broadband connectivity and military veterans' access to telehealth services in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In addition, the University of Virginia’s Center for Telehealth will demonstrate their telemedicine program including  telestroke and teleobstetrics services.

The FCC task force plans to hold similar roundtables, conferences and town hall meetings outside of Washington, D.C. Details of upcoming events will be announced as they become available.

A recorded webcast of the roundtable at the University of Virginia’s Center for Telehealth will be available for playback here.
