Anthem Expands E-Rx Initiative

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Hampshire has expanded the clinical data physicians can access through its electronic prescribing initiative.

Last October, the Blues plan, along with a statewide effort by the New Hampshire Citizens Health Initiative, created an e-Rx program that enables every physician office in the state to use electronic prescribing. The Initiative is a collaborative effort of providers, pharmacists, businesses and non-profit organizations dedicated to improving the quality of health care in the state.

The e-Rx program gives physicians a free mobile phone from Sprint, Overland Park, Kan., the era Now electronic prescribing software developed by Chicago-based Allscripts for the National prescribing Patient Safety Initiative, and discounts on a cellular plan.

The Manchester-based payer now is enabling physicians participating in the initiative to access its members’ medical records and histories on their smart phones while writing electronic prescriptions. Its Member Medical History application also enables physicians to access patient’s treatment, test results and diagnosis data from other clinicians.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
