Advocate Physician Partners, a collaboration of more than 3,400 physicians and Oak Brook, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care, will recommend to its independent physicians the adoption of practice management and electronic health records software from eClinicalWorks Inc., Westborough, Mass.

Advocate Physician Partners estimates just over 10 percent of its 2,600 independent physicians have an existing EHR. Participating physicians will receive an undisclosed discount on the cost of the software. "APP is subsidizing a portion of the start-up costs through the use of a vendor credit payable on behalf of the APP physician member," says a spokesperson for the organization.

APP has started a pilot program and anticipates a phased implementation process that will get more than 1,200 physicians in 400 offices using the EHR by mid-2012. That timeline would enable the physicians to receive full stimulus-funded incentive payments for the meaningful use of EHRs.

Long-term plans including integrating the EHRs with Advocate Health Care's inpatient information systems, clinical quality registry, and EHRs already being used at Advocate Medical Group and Dreyer Medical Clinic.

More information is available at advocatehealth.com/app and eclinicalworks.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
