Final Stage 2 EHR Certification Rule Nears Publication

The Department of Health and Human Services has sent the final rule setting Stage 2 electronic health records certification criteria under the meaningful use program to the Office of Management and Budget for review.

OMB review is one of the final steps before publication of the rule. HHS in mid-July sent to OBM for review the final Stage 2 rule setting criteria for providers to demonstrate they are using mandated functionalities in EHRs in a “meaningful” manner. Consequently, publication of both rules in the Federal Register can be considered to be imminent.

A feature story in the April issue of Health Data Management, “Meaningful Use Stage 2 Brings Cheers, Fears,” examined the popular and worrisome provisions of the proposed rule for providers.

Let's see if they finally get it right! What I expect is a convoluted set of rules that makes my EHR even harder to use. How MEANINGFUL to use should be the goal.
