Authorized under the Children’s Health Insurance Reauthorization Act of 2009, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services collaborated on the new format.
It includes a minimum set of data elements and applicable standards as a blueprint for developers. Specific data elements and functions are grouped in topic areas such as screening, immunizations, growth data, special needs and abuse reporting. The format includes guidance on interoperability to enable exchange of data from inpatient, primary care and school settings.
The American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics and Health Level Seven International participated in developing the format, among other stakeholders. The format next will be tested in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. More information is available here.
