UHC Pushes E-Prescribing in Texas

Health insurer United HealthCare will pay for 200 primary care physicians in Texas to adopt electronic prescribing software.

The project is the initial rollout of such services in the state. The Minneapolis-based payer is using the e-prescribing software of Zix Corp., Dallas.

The vendor will implement a wireless network, PDAs and a desktop computer in selected practices. Zix Corp. will load necessary patient data into the e-prescribing system. It also will provide training and support. United HealthCare will pay for the technology and services for an undisclosed time period.
