Independence Blue Cross, Philadelphia, is providing physicians with compact discs loaded with clinical information about their patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart failure, coronary disease, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The reports, called Smart Registries, had been available only in paper format since the program started in 2004. Now doctors can opt to receive them twice a year on a CD, featuring data that can be sorted. The program uses technology from Health Dialog Services Corp., Boston, Mass.
The CDs indicate whether a patient is in need of a recommended test, procedure or treatment and offer confirmation of tests that have been completed, along with available results. Also included on the CDs is information about patient's "medication persistence," which indicates how often the patient fills their recommended prescriptions and obtains refills in a timely manner.
In a related move, the payer recently announced a member incentive program, Rx for Better Health, which waives co-payments for many prescription drugs that are used to treat chronic conditions.
