A new online directory enables physician practices to consider only practice management information systems that are compliant with the HIPAA 5010 transaction sets, which have a compliance date of January 2012.

The American Medical Association and Medical Group Management Association developed the Practice Management System Software Directory, which presently has about 15 vendors who have proven 5010 compliance and are voluntarily listed. The directory includes such information as price range excluding implementation costs, number of customers, target market, number of years the product has been offered and any affiliated electronic health records products, according to the associations.

The directory is a new add-on to the AMA/MGMA recently released Selecting a Practice Management System toolkit. The kit guides practices through the necessary processes and issues that arise during vendor evaluation and selection. In essence, the new online directory helps to quickly narrow the list of finalist candidates.
