Consensus I.T. Definitions Ready

Recommendations of two industry work groups to develop consensus on the definitions and uses of specific health care information technology terms likely will be made public the week of May 19.

The work groups have submitted reports for review to the Department of Health and Human Services, according to a spokesperson for the National Alliance for Health Information Technology, which has managed the federally funded initiative. The reports will be made public no later than June 3, when the next meeting of the American Health Information Community, an HHS advisory body, will be held.

The work groups focused on definitions and uses of the terms “electronic medical records,” electronic health records,” “personal health records,” “regional health information organization,” and “health information exchange.”

Earlier this year, work on HIE was expanded to include two definitions. One definition will cover only the process of electronic exchange. The second definition will cover describing the governing entity.
