Web Site Tackles Emerging Therapies

The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has launched a new Web site offering expert advice for clinicians and consumers on emerging issues in medical therapies.

The content comes from AHRQ's Centers for Education and Research on Therapeutics, a federally sponsored network of more than a dozen research centers across the nation.

The Web site is called the Clinician-Consumer Health Advisory Information Network, available at chainonline.org. It links users with information to assist in clinical practice and health care decision making in areas of evidence-based medicine undergoing significant changes.

For instance, the site addresses the management of blood clot prevention with drug-eluting stents. It also includes expert opinions about topics where evidence is uncertain, such as restarting antiplatelet therapy if it has been interrupted. The site has information to assist consumers with conversing with clinicians, and an online medication record. For clinicians, the site has a slide library to assist in preparing continuing medical education courses.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
