The Advisory Board Company, a consultancy, has launched a challenge to software developers to increase patient engagement by making it easier for them to share health data with providers. The top prize is $25,000.

The consultancy is following the lead of the federal government in challenging developers. Aneesh Chopra, former U.S. chief technology officer, recently joined the company. The Patient Engagement Blue Button Challenge seeks to increase patient use of the Veterans Department-developed Blue Button technology that enables patients to download health information from providers.
Some hospitals are adopting Blue Button for their patient portals.

But Blue Button also can by patients wanting to upload data to a provider. The Advisory Board has more than 550 hospitals using its Crimson suite of professional services and data analytics software. It’s looking for new Blue Button apps that can help these hospitals encourage patients to upload data via Blue Button and give permission for its use.

The goal is to better leverage data and make improvements in care quality and efficiency (such as lower readmissions) and higher patient engagement (such as better compliance with prescription regimens).

In addition to the top prize, five semifinalists will receive $5,000. Applications are being accepted until August 6 with finalists announced on Sept. 3 and the winner named on Oct. 12. More information is at advisory.com/challenge.
