Castlight Health Inc., which operates a Web site enabling consumers to compare providers’ prices and quality for medical procedures, will add prescription drug price comparison data.

Castlight will integrate with the My Rx Choices portal of Medco Health Solutions Inc., a major pharmacy benefit management firm. The portal enables consumers to compare brand name and generic medication costs via mail service or retail pharmacy. The portal also gives gaps-in-care alerts including late refills.

Castlight’s site offers actual pricing for procedures and out-of-pocket costs for various locations, as well as patient satisfaction data. The site also has educational materials for specific medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Castlight and Medco will market the integrated service to mutual employer customers.

Healthcare Blue Book is another site that lists data for consumers about what fair prices are in their markets for care. We break down pricing by all costs associated with a procedure such as surgeon, anesthesiologist, facility or hospital fee, etc.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
