Web Service Aids in Wound Care

A consulting firm specializing in assessing health care clinical and financial outcomes has introduced a Web-based wound care consultation service.

The WOCN-Connect service of Miller and Huffman Outcome Architects LLC, Winchester, Tenn., connects caregivers with a Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence nurse. A secure Web site enables a provider to input patient information and preferred wound care products used at a facility, and attach a digital photo of a wound, for review by the certified nurse.

WOCN-Connect also includes software to analyze aggregate data to generate outcomes benchmarking reports. Clinicians, for instance, can compare their patients' recovery times, re-hospitalization rates and infection rates against state and national averages. The outcomes software also can support the documenting of wound care for pay-for-performance programs.

Web-based outcomes services are available on a subscription basis. Wound photo consultations are available on a pay-per-use basis. More information and a demonstration is available at wocn-connect.com.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
