The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is preparing a survey to assess the health care industry's awareness of and preparation for transitioning to the HIPAA 5010 transaction sets and ICD-10 code sets.

The self-administered, Web-based survey will cover insurers, providers and vendors. CMS expects the survey to occur during a four-week period this summer, according to a notice published March 10 in the Federal Register.

CMS specifically wants to know the degree to which stakeholders have reached certain milestones for compliance outlined in the HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10 final rules. For 5010, these include completing internal testing by December 2010, starting external testing by January 2011 and full compliance by January 2012.

For ICD-10, the rules suggested beginning compliance activities such as gap analysis, design, development and internal testing by January 2011. The ICD-10 compliance date is Oct. 1, 2013.
