The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is seeking public comment on additions to the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey to measure patients' perspectives of their hospital care.

HCAHPS presently asks discharged patients 27 questions and CMS wants to add five more. Three questions cover transitions of care, one asks if the patient was admitted through the emergency department and one asks about the patient's overall mental health.

The additions are the first since HCAHPS' national implementation in 2006, according to CMS. More information is available in a notice published Sept. 23 in the Federal Register.
