The Michael J. Fox Foundation is seeking Web-based tools that would enable patients with Parkinsons disease to participate in clinical research via their home computers.
The foundation will provide up to $1 million in funds for Web-based clinical assessments of various motor and/or non-motor symptoms of Parkinsons.
The project does not envision Web-based clinical assessments taking the place of face-to-face interaction between patients and researchers. Rather, the tools could reduce the number of trips that patients have to take for in-person interviews, examinations and tests. The tools also could improve communication and the collection and analysis of data, speeding development of new treatments.
The foundation is looking for tools to support online patient assessments and a patient portal, and design and implementation of a pilot study. The foundation, which has funded more than $115 million in Parkinsons research, will solicit proposals through May 14.
Funding is anticipated by October. More information is available at michaeljfox.org. A conference call for interested researchers and vendors is scheduled for March 31. To register, send an e-mail to conferencecalls@michaeljfox.org.
