David Holland, vice president for I.T. and CIO of Southern Illinois Healthcare in Carbondale, Ill., plans to find out more about helping physicians snag incentive payments and transitioning in HIPAA 5010. And now that he’s heading a health information exchange, the CHIME CIO forum is where he’s going to learn about what his peers are doing in the HIE arena.

Holland has attended 11 HIMSS conferences, and one aspect of the show he annually finds value in is that everyone’s there under one roof. “I have 30 vendors,” Holland says. “This is my only chance to try to touch base in a week with all of them.”

This year, Holland is focused on helping the health system’s employed and affiliated physicians earn federal health I.T. subsidies for EHR meaningful use, particularly by assisting in the switch to computerized physician order entry. For this reason, he has blocked off some time to meet with ambulatory EHR vendor NextGen Healthcare Information Systems.

He also has a project underway to convert Southern Illinois Healthcare to ANSI X12 version 5010 standards for electronic transactions. SIH operates three hospitals and a network of clinics, centers of excellence, rehabilitation and occupational health facilities. “Certainly, it’s always a multifaceted objective [at HIMSS], and it changes year to year.” Holland says. “There’s usually some sort of theme.” Holland says.

Holland, who chairs the Health Information Exchange for Southern Illinois, believes HIMSS11 will be about HIE, a key component of meaningful use. Holland is especially looking forward to the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives-sponsored CIO Forum on Sunday, Feb. 19, so he can interact with other CIOs. “I like to spend time with my peeps,” Holland says.

Holland mostly likes to keep tabs on the strategic direction of the companies he does business with, rather than shopping for new products in the rather sterile environment of the show floor. “I don’t sit through demos,” he says. “I usually don’t use HIMSS as a buying process. I don’t see any value in that.”
