CIO at HIMSS: John Halamka’s Hot Spots

Where’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center CIO John Halamka going to spend his time at HIMSS11 in Orlando?

Where’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center CIO John Halamka going to spend his time at HIMSS11 in Orlando? He’ll be heading to the Interoperability Showcase, Halamka, co-chair of the HIT Standards Committee, told Health Data Management. “I’ve heard that ONC will take up a good portion of space in the Interoperability Showcase and the Direct Project will be demonstrated in the Live Exchange area.”

Led by ONC, industry stakeholders through the Direct Project have developed a set of standards to provide a simple, secure and scalable way to exchange data via the Internet with known and trusted recipients, as well as meet Stage 1 meaningful use criteria for data exchange. ONC announced on Feb. 2 that pilot programs using Direct Project standards have begun (see story).

Halamka also wants to hit the HIT X.0 Beyond the Edge conference within HIMSS11. It’s geared to “health care I.T. leaders who want to be on the forefront of innovative ideas, gain exposure to cutting-edge scientific advances, and experience unique explorations in emerging technologies so that they can help lead the future of patient care,” he says.

He plans to hear what top federal officials have to say during their presentations at HIMSS11. They include HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, National HIT Coordinator David Blumenthal, CMS Administrator Donald Berwick and Obama Administration CTO Aneesh Chopra.

Finally, Halamka’s interested in “Leading from the Future: A Thought Leadership Event on Accountable Care Organizations,” a series of sessions over two days. More information is available at http://himssconference.org/future.
