The HIMSS Analytics research and consulting unit of Chicago-based HIMSS created the stages of EMR adoption and tracks hospitals that reach those stages.

HIMSS Analytics calls Stage 7 "the pinnacle of an environment where paper charts are no longer used to deliver patient care." Other achievements at this stage include sending secure standardized summary record transactions to other providers, and using clinical databases to improve care delivery, patient safety and outcomes.

The three hospitals of Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem and 24 hospitals of Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente also have reached Stage 7. More information and a list of hospitals are available at himssanalytics.org/hc_providers/stage7Award.asp.
