Since 2006, the Certification Commission on Healthcare Information Technology has certified 136 ambulatory electronic health records applications from 93 vendors, about half the estimated ambulatory market, says Mark Leavitt, M.D., chair of CCHIT.
Leavitt on July 17 in Chicago updated nearly 100 volunteer workgroup members as they started developing criteria for certification programs in 2009.
Of the 47 ambulatory EHRs certified in the 2007 program year, which ended June 30, 2008, 55% came from newly participating vendors.
Only 24% of companies with a 2006 certified product had it updated under 2007 criteria. An initial certification is good for three years, but some vendors believe the marketing advantage gained justifies the resources to get recertified under expanded criteria more regularly.
In the 2007 program, CCHIT certified inpatient EHRs for the first time. Leavitt estimates that 58% of vendors in that market participated. Among these vendors, 62% have annual revenue of more than $100 million and 23% have revenue of less than $20 million. Fifty-four percent of certified inpatient systems serve hospitals with less than 150 beds, according to Leavitt.
CCHIT is developing new behavioral health and personal health records programs for 2009. More information is available at cchit.org.
