The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology has certified three additional inpatient electronic health records systems.

That brings to nine the number of EHRs certified under the commission’s initial criteria for inpatient systems. CCHIT gave full certification to two products: Millennium PowerChart 2007 by Cerner Corp. and MAGIC 5.6 Advanced Clinical Systems from Medical Information Technology Inc.

CCHIT awarded pre-market conditional certification to INVISION Clinical Version 27.0 with Pharmacy and Medication Administration Check 24.0 from Siemens Medical Solutions. This means the system will be fully certified once its operational use in a hospital is verified.

Complete lists of inpatient and ambulatory EHRs certified under CCHIT’s 2006 and 2007 criteria are available at cchit.org.

The commission recently published drafts of certification criteria and test scripts for 2008 certification, which will start later this year. CCHIT will accept comment until Feb. 16. Details are at cchit.org/participate/public-comment.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
