A survey from the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology shows large numbers of the 468 respondents find proposed Stage 2 meaningful use criteria that expands nine existing objectives and measures in Stage 1 are too aggressive.
Thirty-six percent of respondents were providers and 29 percent were electronic health records vendors, with the remaining respondents representing other stakeholders.
More than half of surveyed providers and 40 percent of vendors said syndromic surveillance was not ready to be a core measure in Stage 2; it is a menu or optional measure now. While an initial draft of Stage 2 criteria requires drug formulary checks for 80 percent of patients, even surveyed providers using an electronic prescribing network to get formulary information said the availability of such information is not ready to support such a high percentile.
Survey responders also voice substantial concern about initial proposed criteria for medication reconciliation, patient access to their health information within four days, submission of immunization data, exchanging key clinical information, use of clinical decision support, submission of reportable lab results and, drug/drug or drug/allergy checks.
