Texas Children's Cancer Center has introduced a Web-based health history that childhood cancer survivors can access during their lifetime.
About 70% of these survivors will develop chronic medical problems related to their original cancer diagnosis within 30 years, according to a 2006 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The center developed the application, called Passport for Care, with Baylor College of Medicine. Patients can grant access to their history to physicians. The application also offers follow-up care guidelines developed by the Children's Oncology Group, an international consortium of childhood cancer centers.
Texas Children's Cancer Center has created histories and care plans for 300 former patients and now is rolling out the application to other organizations. City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif., soon will offer the application. Passport for Care will be offered to all 238 Children's Oncology Group member institutions by mid-2009.
