Breakthrough, Partnership for Siemens

Siemens Healthcare has announced "breakthrough" medical imaging technology and a partnership with Surgical Information Systems.

Siemens has received 510 (k) marketing clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for Biograph mMR, a system to enable simultaneous whole-body acquisition of data from magnetic resonance and positron emission tomography imaging. This enables users to get a more complete diagnostic picture of soft tissue, cellular activity and metabolism at the same time.

Biograph mMR, the first such technology of its kind, according to Siemens, is particularly valuable for oncology and neurology applications. Initial implementations include two hospitals in Germany and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Under its new partnership, Siemens will market the surgical and anesthesia information systems of Surgical Information Systems and integrate the applications with its Soarian, INVISION and MedSeries4 hospital information systems. Siemens also will offer SIS' analytics software.
