Another Day, Another Breach, This Time Hitting 55,000

Cancer Care Group, an Indianapolis-based radiology practice, has reported the theft from an employee’s vehicle of a laptop bag containing unencrypted back-up data on about 55,000 patients and employees.

The theft occurred on July 19. Compromised information includes Social Security numbers, names, addresses, dates of birth, medical record numbers, insurance information and some clinical information for billing purposes.

The practice is not disclosing whether affected individuals have been offered credit and/or identity protection services. The practice now is encrypting all portable electronic media. At least one law firm, Meiselman, Denlea, Packman, Carton & Eberz of White Plains, N.Y., is soliciting victims of this breach to file suit.
