Two hospitals recently signed contracts to implement biometric identification technology that verifies identification based on an individual's unique vein pattern in the palm.

Elkin, N.C.-based Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital will use the Palm Identity software of Biz Technology Solutions Inc., Morrisville, N.C. The software uses palm scanners from Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc.

Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler, Mo., is using Fujitsu's PalmSecure vein authentication system for its time and attendance system. The 60-bed hospital replaced a fingerprint-based biometric system. The new contactless system has reduced false negatives common with the fingerprint system and has improved infection control, says Daniel Cook, networking engineer at the hospital.

More information is available at biztechnologysolutions.com and fujitsu.com.
