Hiawatha (Kan.) Community Hospital, a 25-bed critical access facility, has implemented a bar code bedside medication management administration system.

The hospital is using the software and scanning devices of IntelliDOT Corp., San Diego. The system collects and matches bar codes to verify and document the right patient, medication, dose, route and time of administration.

The application is integrated to the hospital's pharmacy information system from Hann's On Software, now part of Mediware Information Systems Inc., Lenexa, Kan.

One of the most difficult parts of the vendor selection process was to find a bar code system that was financially feasible, says Jean Abeita, director of pharmacy at Hiawatha Community Hospital.

More information is available at hch-ks.org and intellidotcorp.com.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
