Hospital Adopts Bedside Rx Bar Codes

Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., has implemented a wireless, bar code bedside medication management system using hand-held computers.

The 206-bed hospital is using the Bedside Medication Administration application of IntelliDOT Corp., San Diego. The application interfaces with admission-discharge-transfer, pharmacy, electronic medication administration record and other modules of Halifax Regional’s hospital information system from Medical Information Technology Inc., Westwood, Mass. The medication system uses the Cloverleaf interface engine of Dallas-based Healthvision.

The hand-helds wirelessly compare bar code data with patient demographic and pharmacy order data to match the correct patient, medication and delivery method at the point of administration. Completion of administration then is automatically documented on the electronic medication administration record.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
