Panorama City Hospital, which opened in March, is the first Kaiser Permanente hospital in Southern California to implement bedside medication administration management software.

The facility is using the bar code-based system of its core electronic health records vendor, Epic Systems Corp., Verona, Wis. Some Kaiser hospitals in Northern California already have bedside bar coding for medication administration. All 12 Kaiser hospitals in Southern California should have it by the end of 2009.

The bar coding is part of a final phase of Kaiser’s HealthConnect initiative to implement a wide range of clinical, financial and administrative information systems. Other functionalities in the final phase include computerized physician order entry; online access to laboratory and radiology tests; clinical documentation; and operating room, equipment and set-up scheduling.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
