SA Health, the public health system of South Australia, has entered into negotiations with Chicago-based Allscripts on a contract that could cover 80 hospitals.

Allscripts is the vendor of choice and plans to deploy the Sunrise Enterprise 5.5 suite of clinical, administrative and financial software from recently acquired Eclipsys. The agreement is subject to completion of negotiations and final approval during the first half of 2011 with implementation then starting in the second half.

The 80 hospitals serve a population of 1.6 million across an area about 40 percent larger than Texas. The South Australia government has a $300 million initiative for implementing a single, integrated information system across all facilities.

Looking to build better care coordination, health systems are buying physician groups in droves. Making the deal work, however, requires careful management on the I.T. front.
