Feds Want Health Care Consumers to Report Safety Events

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is getting set to build a prototype consumer reporting system for patient safety events.

Many adverse medical events go unreported and AHRQ wants to narrow the gap by enabling patients or their families to report incidents. “AHRQ recognizes that the unique perspective of health care consumers could reveal important information that is not reported by health care providers,” according to a notice being published in the Federal Register on Sept. 10 and now available here. “Patient reports could complement and enhance reports from providers and thus produce a more complete and accurate understanding of the prevalence and characteristics of medical adverse events.”

AHRQ in the notice explains data collection processes that will support the consumer reporting system, including development of Web and telephone methods of consumer reporting, and a follow-up survey of providers.
