However, “government officials are sending mixed signals that many in the health care community will interpret as a reason for delay,” says Dan Rode, vice president for advocacy and policy at AHIMA. Any delays in preparation will increase actual costs and may diminish the value of other initiatives such as electronic health records meaningful use, he adds.
AHIMA intends to submit comments of concern to Acting CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner about her Feb. 13 pledge to the American Medical Association to re-examine the pace of ICD-10 implementation. Since early 2009, stakeholders have made huge investments in good faith to prepare for the new code sets, Rode notes.
