Health insurer Aetna has created Healthagen, a new division to rebrand and highlight its information technology service and software businesses, and to incubate new I.T. products as the company accelerates technical support for new care delivery and payment models.

Healthagen initially houses the ActiveHealth Management population management software and professional services, the Medicity health information exchange technology, and the iTriage medical reference content mobile app for consumers. These units collectively link more than 800 hospitals and 250,000 physicians through Medicity, manage health for 22 million consumers, and support eight million mobile app users. The new division supports 18 accountable care organization relationships and more than 65 Medicare provider collaborations, according to Aetna.

Charles E. Saunders, M.D., hired in 2011 to develop Aetna’s new strategy to accelerate its information technology services, is CEO of Healthagen. Saunders has served as an executive at private equity firm Warburg Pincus, CEO of supply chain vendor Broadlane, president of EDS Healthcare Global Industry Solutions, CMO of Healtheon/WebMD, and as an emergency physician, among other roles.

The insurer will demonstrate Healthagen services during HIMSS13 in New Orleans and anticipates introducing several new technologies and services during 2013. More information is available at healthagen.com.
