Emergency department software and documentation vendor T-System Inc. continues building a revenue cycle management portfolio with its third acquisition of 2012.

The Dallas-based company has bought Marina Medical Billing Service, Cerritos, Calif., for an undisclosed sum. Marina offers outsourced billing and coding services to emergency department physicians, serving 1,800 in 110 facilities in 13 states. The physicians handle about about three million ER visits a year, says Mikael Ohman, COO at T-System.

The acquisition is the largest for T-System, Ohman adds. Earlier this year, the company acquired Practice Management Associates, an outsourced billing and collections firm, and Clinical Coding Solutions, which offers standalone coding software or outsourced services. The three acquisitions make up a new division of T-System, called RevCycle+.

T-System now serves about 1,900 hospitals in all 50 states. More than 1,400 use the vendor’s paper templates for documenting care and about 315 use its emergency department information system. The remaining clients use revenue cycle management services.

The acquisitions enable T-System to cross sell a larger portfolio of product and services, and the company will continue to look for additional buys, including areas beyond revenue cycle, Ohman says. The strategy is to build extensive services for emergency departments and urgent care facilities to streamline registration processes, the provision of care and patient hand-offs.
