Hospital information systems vendor Document Storage Systems Inc. has acquired Informatix Laboratories Corp., which sells revenue cycle management software. Acquisition terms were not disclosed.

Juno Beach, Fla.-based DSS sells a commercialized and expanded version of the VistA information system used by the Veterans Administration. Salt Lake City-based Informatix sells the Patient Account Management System to Native American Tribal medical facilities and some urban health centers.

The patient account software integrates with the Indian Health Service's Resource and Patient Management System, which is similar to VistA. The acquisition gives DSS additional technology and the opportunity to market its own applications to Indian Health Service and tribal sites. These include the release of information, document imaging and management, clinical note template and mental health applications.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
