Parsippany, N.J.-based MD On-Line Inc. has acquired for an undisclosed price Medical Claim Corp. of Bristol, Conn. Both companies are claims clearinghouses serving physician practices.

David Johndrow, founder of Medical Claim Corp., has retired. MD On-Line will retain the facility and staff in Bristol. Medical Claim Corp. brings about 10,000 physicians to MD On-Line, which now has 30,000 customers.

Medical Claim Corp., which processes more than 10 million claims annually, also brings more than 100 new direct-connected payers--including many Medicare and Medicaid plans--to complement MD-Online's 75 direct connects. Both clearinghouses, like many others, send claims and related transactions to additional insurers through Emdeon Business Services, Nashville, Tenn.

In addition to processing claims and related transactions, MD-Online prints and mails patient statements, converts paper claims to electronic media for insurers and has 28 payers using its front-end claims submission Web portal.

A major success factor for accountable care organizations will be linking caregivers across the spectrum of care delivery. If history is any indication, that's going to be an industrywide struggle.
