For the first time in its history, the American College of Emergency Physicians will feature a 9,000 square-foot, interactive mock emergency department featuring the latest innovations in emergency care at its annual meeting, Scientific Assembly-ACEP13, to be held Oct.14-17 in Seattle. InnovatED, an area where subject matter experts will discuss and debate ideas to improve patient care, will be open on the exhibit floor of the Washington State Convention Center from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 14-16.

"Emergency medicine's history is one of innovation and improvisation," Alex Rosenau, D.O., ACEP's incoming president, said in a statement announcing the feature. "InnovatED will be a hands-on space for emergency physicians attending ACEP13 to gather and discuss innovations in emergency medical care."

Thirty-seven companies are showcasing innovations in emergency ultrasound, emergency department information systems and communications, diagnostics, simulation, telemedicine, patient kiosks, scribe services, patient monitoring, emergency department robotics, pre-hospital services and airway management. InnovatED will feature a patient treatment and trauma room, a pre-hospital treatment area, patient check-ins and waiting areas, staffing stations and a communication center.

InnovatED will also feature dynamic "ED Talks" on creative solutions to drive change in the emergency department. Clinicians and educators will give presentations every 10 minutes on these educational topics that feature the latest innovations in emergency medicine.

"The involvement and interaction of emergency physicians makes the InnovatED space unique and allows for a deeper dive than traditional trade show sales booths." said Dr. Rosenau. "InnovatED encourages participants to give their comments to industry leaders and fellow emergency physicians. This feedback will help shape the future of emergency care for the 130 million visits to the nation's emergency departments every year."
