Electronic prescribing network vendor Surescripts has been expanding its capabilities to also transmit clinical information and now has a major partner in the 75,000-member American Academy of Family Physicians.

The organizations have teamed to build AAFP Physicians Direct, a secure clinical messaging system being offered to AAFP members for $15 per physician per month. The physician members will be able to transmit referrals, patient summaries, discharge summaries, lab results and other clinical data with any other subscribers to the Surescripts Network for Clinical Interoperability. The network also will enable the transmittal of alerts to any provider including nonsubscribers.

AAFP members will access the Surescripts clinical network via an AAFP Web portal or through electronic health records systems connected to the Surescripts network. Vendors that have announced they will link to the network include Amazing Charts, e-MDs and SOAPware.

Physician use of the Surescripts network for e-prescribing will continue to be free. More information soon will be available at aafp.org/physiciansdirect.
