The Center for Democracy & Technology in Washington has published a Frequently Asked Questions page for patients seeking to get their medical records from providers and insurers.

The site has more than 20 questions covering such topics as why patients would want the records, how to get them, correcting records, and keeping them private and secure.

“While health information technology can make it easier for patients to access and correct their data, patients still need to know the steps to take to obtain copies of their health records, what to do if a provider or plan refuses a request to obtain or correct a record, and how patients should protect their health records once they have them,” according to an explanation of the service.

The FAQs are available here.
